Welcome to 2nd Grade Dance

Come Spring the students explored Unstructured Dance better known as Creative Dance. They explored movement through the Elements of Dance; levels, direction, speed, axial, and locomotor movements. While traveling throughout the United States on their Amazing Race, they explored and learned about how dance is used in various cultures. The students learned that unstructured dance communicates a message of everyday life.

During the winter months, second graders enjoyed participating in the celebration of Mardi Gras. Throughout areas of the south, some communities organize special Children’s Mardi Gras Runs so kids can participate in and learn about the traditions. The last stop on the run is to dance and perform (juggling) for donations throughout the community to add to the traditional “Gumbo” meal. On the final evening of Mardi Gras while the Gumbo is cooking, the whole town joins in as they listen to Cajun bands and dance.

In the early months of the school year Second Graders continue to learn calls while working together to follow the rhythm of the song. Some of the calls they learn are promenade your partner, do-si-do your partner and corner, allemande your corner, and left/right hand star. The boys and girls begin to relax and enjoy the fun moving about with their groups.
